Vaughn Gehle seconded. Motion carried. Petition Corey Butler moved to approve a petition from a student to substitute his first-year seminar from St. Benedicts for our FYS. Vaughn Gehle seconded. Motion carried. Proposal for meeting LEP Goal 10: Mind, Body, and Spirit There was discussion about whether this proposal would add credits to the existing LEP. The proposal outlines options for short credits that focus on physical activity. The Committee talked about how to get at assessing this goal; perhaps it also could be accomplished through intramural sports, participation as a student athlete, theatre activities, religious activities, etc. This is a wide, lofty goal that is difficult to address. Lori suggested that we might add questions about the goal in the Senior Survey. Vaughn and Lori suggested that we may want to host a focus group next year, to ask students about how we might want to assess progress in this goal. Lyn suggested that we may want to work with Student Services and Christine Olson to see if some of this assessment may be related to or couched in civic engagement. Corey will talk with Frankie and thank her for her proposal. Rubrics The Oral Communication Rubric was presented for discussion. The Committee agreed that we eventually would like to get all of the rubrics structured in a consistent way. We need to create a timeline for rubrics to be completed; mid-fall would seem to be reasonable, as we will need to complete assessment of the critical thinking and communications goals at the end of fall term. Currently, there are four rubrics that are critical to complete: oral communication, written communication, critical thinking, and information literacy. The Committee also reviewed the Critical Thinking Rubric. Vaughn shared that the rubric may be too focused on the dialectical approach and not enough on problem solving for use as an assessment of University learning outcomes. Corey shared an overview of what the Critical Thinking Assessment scores; the assessment targets Blooms Taxonomy of Cognitive Skills: evaluation, synthesis, analysis, application, and comprehension. Will Thomas suggested that we schedule a series of individual rubric meetings to get at content and structure. The Committee discussed presenting the finished rubrics to student focus groups as well, to determine how well the students comprehend the outcomes and the language used in the rubrics. The majority of Committee members agreed that using three levels of competence would be best for the respective rubrics. The terms for the rubric headings we would prefer (for consistency): would be beginning, developing, and proficient. Lori will go back to the English Department with the suggestions, Brett will speak with Philosophy, Corey will talk with the Speech Department, and Maria will visit with the Librarians. Lyn asked that we discuss the shape of LACOB in relation to the CIA over the next few weeks. Corey volunteered to meet with her to address these questions.
